Celebrating 48th Bon Odori Festival 2024 in Selangor

A major cultural festival is once again celebrated in style in Selangor. This yearly celebration usually happens in the month of July, and this year 2024, it was held at Kompleks Sukan Negara Shah Alam (Panasonic), Selangor. Organised by the Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur and in collaboration with Tourism Selangor, Bon Odori marks the long-term relationship between Japan and the State of Selangor for the 16th consecutive year.

I attended a few Bon Odori festivals before covid strike, and I enjoyed very much as it was fun and lively. There were lots of food and many people wore the Kimono or Yukata. My girl wore a nice blue Yukata that I bought for her from Japan then.

This 48th Bon Odori Festival featured a number of cultural performances from Japan including Nihon Buyou-Bu dance, Bon Odori Dance, Wadaiko Dance, drum performers, lantern ornaments, traditional Japanese attire, food and local products. This event draws an impressive crowd of over 40,000 visitors and has showcased Selangor's diverse and multicultural community.

Yang Berhormat Dato' Ng Suee Lim, the EXCO of Local Government and Tourism, that this festival has a positive trend that brought a significant 45% increase of Japanese tourists visiting Selangot, thus bolstering Selangot's tourism sector and enhancing the Japanese market. "With Visit Selangor year approaching 2025, we believe that festivals like Bon Odori are pivotal in attracting tourists and achieving our goal of welcoming 8 million visitors next year," added Dato' Ng

Crowds can also take a rest in the shade on the steps of the staduim.
Some opted to sit in the middle of the field and have a good view of all around.

Through the international tourism campaign, "Splendid Selangor, Take Me Anywhere!" the Bon Odori will be a turning point to increase cooperation between the interested nations. The campaign potentially establishes Selangor as a premier travel destination in Asia and globally.
