The Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk, Exploring Historical Culture

Royal Klang town oozes with lots of historical buildings and culture. This town is already well known for Bak Kut Teh amongst the Chinese community in Malaysia, and Little India, a popular shopping venue for Indians. Thus, I was very happy to be invited by Tourism Selangor to participate in this FAM trip on the 13th August 2024.
Tourism Selangor, in collaboration with the Royal Klang Town Municipal Council, has proudly organize a Media Familiarisation (FAM) Trip for 30 esteemed media members. The trip aimed to showcase the rich history and cultural heritage of Royal Klang Town through the Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk (RKTHW), a key initiative underscoring the state's dedication to preserving its historical monuments and local culture.
The Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk is a curated journey through the town’s most iconic landmarks, designed to immerse visitors in the historical significance and cultural richness of the area. During the FAM Trip, participants explored several notable locations, including Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery, Chennai Silk, Klang Royal Club, Alam Shah Palace, Jalan Tengku Kelana, Klang Convent School and Church, Masjid India, Balai Bomba Klang and Gedung Raja Abdullah.

When we were at Chennai Silk, we had so much fun as two of the media were dressed up in Indian attire

This FAM Trip not only highlighted the architectural and historical significance of these sites but also emphasized the importance of integrating cultural heritage into the state’s tourism strategy. The Royal Klang Town Heritage Walk is a shining example of how historical preservation can contribute to sustainable tourism, fostering a deeper appreciation of Selangor’s unique identity.

 1. Royal Gallery Sultan Abdul Aziz

The journey begins at the Royal Gallery Sultan Abdul Aziz, where visitors can immerse themselves in the regal heritage of Klang. This gallery houses artefacts, photographs, and memorabilia that showcase the legacy of Sultan Abdul Aziz, an important figure in the history of Selangor.
The Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery (Galeri Diraja Sultan Abdul Aziz) is located in Klang, the royal town and former capital of Selangor. The impressive gallery highlights the rich history and heritage of the Selangor Sultanate, originating in 1766 from the Bugis Sulawesi royal family of Opu Tanreburung Daeng Relaka of the Malay Archipelago.
The gallery is housed in the magnificent Bangunan Sultan Suleiman, a classic colonial building with a rich history. Built in 1909 by British architect Arthur B. Hubback, it was used by the British as the land and administration office during the colonial era, the Japanese during World War II as its war headquarters and later by several local authorities until its recent restoration into the current gallery.
The gallery was established in honour of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who ruled for over 39 years as the Sultan of Selangor and two years as the King of Malaysia.

Exhibits

Gain an insight into the late Sultan’s life with an excellent collection of exhibits that document his childhood and early years as crown prince, his career in military and public offices as well as his appointment as the eighth Sultan of Selangor in 1960 and Eleventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2001.

The Royal Collections consist of a range of outstanding artifacts and gifts received and collected during his reign. Among the collections include replicas of Selangor’s crown jewels, royal seal of Sultan Abdul Samad (fourth Sultan of Selangor) and state sword decorated with silver and Burmese rubies used by the fifth Sultan of Selangor.
